Keep in Touch With Your Orthodontist Even After Your Braces Are Removed

A few decades ago, wearing braces was something that was ridiculed in school, but today all that has changed. So many students get braces today that it is extremely common and not the subject of ridicule any longer. Children wear braces for many different reasons, but they all have one thing in common – they make regular visits to an orthodontist.

Most people think an orthodontist is needed to put the braces on, which is true. However, an orthodontist is needed from the time braces are put on a patient’s teeth until they are removed, and after. Yes, even after the braces are removed, an orthodontist is needed to ensure that there are no problems with a patient’s teeth.

Contrary to what many people think, and despite all the money that parents’ pay, braces do not always provide a permanent solution. Braces are often put on because teeth are growing a certain way. Braces will correct the problem and shift the teeth, however, once they are removed, the teeth have a tendency to go back to their original place. For example, spaces between teeth that have been fixed by braces may begin to reappear sometime after the braces are removed.

When teeth begin to shift back to their original positions after braces are removed, it doesn’t mean that the orthodontist has done a poor job. Teeth often seem to have a mind of their own, and braces are sometimes merely a temporary correction. This is why it is important to have regular follow-up visits with your orthodontist office. This is also why retainers are an important part of any corrective strategy for your teeth. Retainers help to prevent the teeth from moving back to their original positions.

The worst course of action would be to completely forget about your orthodontist after removal of your braces. This might allow the teeth to move back to their original placement and require the same about of time and money to correct the problem. If you continue with regular check-ups, you can fix any issues before they become overwhelming and require extensive corrective measures. You don’t want to have to pay twice for the full price for braces.

If you have recently had your braces removed and think you are finished with the orthodontist, think again. Having regular check-ups can save you time and money, and keep your smile looking its very best!
